When you know you won’t be able to ride for a while, due to travel, weather, or lack of time, it’s important to store your motorcycle properly. After all, your bike is much more than just an investment. Store your bike effectively to keep it safe during any season.

Choose Safety and Security for Motorcycle Storage

You could store your motorcycle in a shed or in your garage. But given our notoriously wet winters, flooding is always a risk. Likewise, break-ins are a possibility, too. Instead, consider renting a storage unit. Our units are climate-controlled and offer premium security for your motorcycle and other household goods.

Clean Your Motorcycle

Before you store your motorcycle, remove any debris. If you leave dead bugs, mud, or dirt on your motorcycle, it will only be harder to remove after storage.

Lubricate Internal Components

If you’re planning to store your bike for a couple of months or longer, use a light coat of oil on essential internal components.

Fill Your Tank with Gas

As long as you’re storing your motorcycle for six months or less, it’s smart to fill it with gas before putting it in storage. Consider adding a fuel stabilizer before putting it in storage. If you need motorcycle storage for more than six months, completely draining the fuel tank is also an option. To prevent rust, line the tank with fogging oil.

Change Your Oil and Oil Filter

If you need to store your motorcycle for more than a month, change the oil before storing it. Old oil is more likely to corrode your engine parts. While you’re at it, consider replacing the oil filter too.

Charge Your Battery

If you’re storing your bike for a few months, and you will have access to it, keep the battery on it. Be sure to start your bike once a month to charge the battery. If you need to store your motorcycle for longer, consider removing your battery and hooking it up to a trickle charger.

Prevent Tire Flat Spots

It’s important to keep weight off your tire s while your motorcycle is in storage. A motorcycle stand is a great solution for this. If you don’t want to invest in a stand, fill the tires to their maximum PSI and rotate them every few weeks.

Cover Your Motorcycle

If you choose a climate-controlled storage unit, you won’t have to worry about the elements. However, a motorcycle cover that fits your bike will prevent it from collecting dust.
